You can ask ChatGPT to “make my resume better”, but oftentimes you’ll get a page of fluff, partially hallucinated.
AI can’t know what you did if you never tell it.
I’ll show you how to properly use AI to help with your job search.
By the end, you’ll have a resume built from your real work, aimed at 1 real job title.
Upload your current resume, even if it’s rough.
1. Find the work you forgot you did…
First, start with an interview.
Instead of a list of responsibilities, show what your job was. Recruiters want to know what YOU changed - the impact you had.
Paste this into your chat, along with your resume:
Interview me like you’re writing a short biography of my work. Your job is to build a fact bank. Ask 1 question at a time. Cover each job and side project. For each, find the problem, what I did myself, who shared the work, and what changed. Look for real numbers and ask where I could check them. If I can’t explain a result or what caused it, mark it unverified and move on after 2 follow-up questions. Once you’ve covered every role, give me only 2 brief lists: facts I reported with ways to check them, and my claims that still need proof. Start with 1 question.
Answer the questions until it covers everything you can think of.
For example:
“handled customer support” —> “answered 80 customer emails/day”
Now we have the raw facts of your story!
The next prompt decides which ones matter for the job.
2. Match the job with honest proof
Find 1 open role you want.
Copy the full job post into the same chat.
Use my fact bank and the job post below. Give me 3 things:
1. Rank the 5 most important job needs, label each required or preferred, and show my proof or “no proof yet.”
2. Write a short, plain-text resume for this role. Bullet 1 must prove the highest-ranked need I can actually support. If I have no proof for need 1, use the next required need with proof. Put my best relevant number or result in bullet 2, unless it is already in bullet 1. Give more space to recent relevant work; use max 2 bullets for an older, less relevant job. Combine repeated duties. Each bullet should show my action and its result, preferably with numbers. Keep my titles, dates, and level of ownership. Use simple headings, no tables, and no “I” or “my” in bullets.
3. Be brutally honest and judge whether I am a good fit.
Here is the full job post: [PASTE JOB POST]
Look at the top 2 bullets first!
They should show the best proof you have for this job.
Read the new draft. Make sure everything’s accurate.
Then let this last prompt try to find what you missed…
3. Give it the recruiter test
Your draft may sound good but still leave this unanswered:
“Why should I interview this person?”
So, let’s stay in the same chat.
If you edited the draft, paste your version before this prompt.
Review the resume you just wrote against the job post and my fact bank.
Would you invite me to interview? Give up to 3 strong reasons and 3 doubts, pointing to exact lines or gaps.
Check the top of the page: does bullet 1 prove the highest-ranked required need with evidence, or the next required need I can prove? Does bullet 2 show my best relevant number or result, unless bullet 1 already does? Does an older job take too much space? Then fix only problems that my “facts bank” supports.
Return a FINAL RESUME in plain text that I can paste into a document. Lead with my newest relevant job. Keep an older, less relevant job to at most 2 bullets by combining related work. Start each bullet with an action verb. Use no “I” or “my”. Remove numbers with no basis.
Last, ask me 3 tough interview questions relevant to the job.
If you can’t answer those 3 questions with real examples, fix your resume before you send it.
One last check:
Copy your resume into a plain text note. If the order breaks or words go missing, use a simpler layout. Always send the file type the employer asks for.
AI can help you tell your story clearly, so that you rise above the noise. But it can’t make you a strong fit just by changing words.
Everyone wants AI-fluent candidates
But the good news…
Every employer wants to hire folks who know how to use AI!
And very likely, the person interviewing you doesn’t know much about AI themselves…
So, here’s a goated tip:
If you use Codex or Claude Cowork/Code, run this prompt:
Review all our chats the past 60 days.
Identify my AI skills that I can put in my resume.
Make sure to include hot keywords in your resume like “AI”, “AI Agents”, “Claude”, “ChatGPT”, "Perplexity”, “Automation”, etc. (assuming you’re using these)

One last tip before you apply
You can use LinkedIn or Indeed to FIND jobs.
But I recommend you apply directly on the company’s careers page.
That often feeds the employer’s applicant tracking system (ATS), so you’ll have a higher chance of hearing back.
If you use an AI agent (Codex or Claude Cowork) that works in your browser, ask it to find the company’s careers page, fill in the form from your approved resume, and STOP before it sends anything. Review everything, especially dates, location, names. Then submit.
Your goal is 1 job app that highlights you’re a real fit, not 100 forms filled with the same generic slop. You can typically reuse the same resume for the same job title, but you’ll want to create a new resume version for a different job title.
